German Chocolate Cake

Were celebrating my dads birthday tonight. He loves german chocolate cake.

What do you get a man that has everything? Food.

Here is what you need:

For the cake
1/2 Cup boiling water
4 oz bar of germans sweet chocolate
1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar
4 eggs, separated
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk

For the Frosting:
1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
3 egg yolks
1/2 cup butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease the 3 8in cake rounds. In a small bowl, pour boiling water onto chocolate and stir until melted. Set aside to cool. In a large mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time beating well after each addition. On low speed blend in cooled chocolate and vanilla. In a separate
bowl, combine flour, soda, and salt. Add the dry mix to your previous mix slowly alternating it with the buttermilk and mixing after each addition. In a small bowl beat egg whites until stiff. Fold whites into batter. Pour mixture into prepared pans. Bake 35-40 mins or until toothpick is inserted into the center and comes out clean. Cool and remove from pans.

For frosting:
In a saucepan, over medium heat, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter and vanilla. Cook and stir until thick, about 12 minutes. Stir in coconut and pecans. Beat until thick enough to spread. Place 1 layer in between each cakes and then one layer on top. Spread on sides if you wish.

I may not get 100 points for presentation, but dang is that frosting good.
I'll let you know how it goes over with the pops
